Your behavior while on vacation can say a lot about you. There are habits that can ruin impressions and make your image less appealing. By avoiding them, you can appear much more sophisticated and leave a pleasant impression in any company.

Golden Rules of Etiquette

There is nothing wrong with feeling relaxed on vacation, as that is precisely its purpose. However, according to etiquette expert Laura Windsor, there is a fine line between ease and showing 'bad taste'.

She shared her golden rules: seven things you should stop doing if you want to appear more cultured and confident while traveling.

Flip-flops

For those vacationing in the city, this is a major taboo. Flip-flops are only appropriate on the beach, by the pool, or in changing rooms. They reflect poor taste and are unsuitable for the situation.

'Reserving' Sun Loungers

You should not reserve loungers for friends. This resembles schoolyard behavior when someone 'cuts in line'. It's frustrating now. Adults should respect others and themselves.

Spaghetti with a Spoon

Eating spaghetti with a spoon and fork is a major mistake. If you ordered pasta, eat it like Italians do - with just a fork. No extra utensils are needed for this. Otherwise, it looks like a sign of 'tourist'. Laura also advises not to stack dishes for waitstaff, not to add salt before trying the dish, and not to tuck the napkin into the collar.

Alcohol in the Morning

Some start drinking at the airport or immediately at the hotel. This looks unappealing. Excessive alcohol in the morning can lead to awkward situations, especially if someone records it on camera. In southern Europe, it’s customary to sip wine or other drinks during meals, not 'downing' them.

Ketchup in Restaurants

Cultural ignorance is another mistake. In foreign establishments, you should not demand familiar sauces like ketchup or mayonnaise. It’s better to eat what the cuisine offers, as the locals do. Respecting other people's traditions is a duty.

Socks with Sandals

This duo always appears inappropriate. Foreigners can easily recognize such tourists from afar.

Applause After a Plane Lands

Applauding after a plane lands is a sign of an inexperienced traveler. Landing is a challenging task, but it’s pilot's work. In reality, this habit appears naive.

The first rule of etiquette to remember when using stairs is to understand from which side you are ascending and from which side you are descending. Especially if there is only one staircase that serves both ways.

If two people are going up the stairs at the same time, you can use either side of the stairs.

Your behavior while on vacation can reflect not only your habits but also your culture and respect for others. Adhering to simple etiquette rules while on vacation can help you leave a positive impression and appear more confident in any situation.
