Conditions of Viktoriia Roshchyna's Detention in Taganrog's Pre-Trial Detention Center
A Ukrainian prisoner of war, using the alias Britva, gave an account in October 2025 of the treatment of journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna while she was held in a Russian detention center in Taganrog. Roshchyna, a military correspondent who had been reporting since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022, disappeared on August 3, 2024, in occupied territory. Her capture was later confirmed by Ukraine's Security Service. Her death was reported on October 10, 2024, and the criminal case into her demise was reclassified as a war crime combined with intentional homicide.
Britva stated that he and Roshchyna were held in adjacent cells for a period. The journalist was repeatedly placed in a punishment cell, where she endured systematic beatings. Conditions there were severe: the cell was tiny, and in the morning, detainees were forced to remove their mattresses while the bed frame remained bolted down.
"You either walk around or sit on the floor," Britva remarked about the confinement conditions.
Reaction to the Death of Viktoriia Roshchyna
During one morning inspection, Roshchyna asked for a psychologist, after which she suffered a hysterical breakdown.
"And the girl starts having a hysterical fit. And they [the guards] yell at her: 'Go to your cell! Stop fraying our nerves!'" Britva recounted. She entered her cell, and it later became clear she had torn off a plastic light fixture cover and cut her wrists, though not deeply, only breaking the skin. Medical personnel rushed to the scene.
This was not Roshchyna's first detention; she had been seized by the FSB in occupied Berdiansk in March 2022 but was later released. Tragically, before her death, she had been on a list for a prisoner exchange and was expected to return home soon. Her case has drawn international condemnation, highlighting the grave risks faced by journalists in conflict zones. Posthumously, she was awarded Ukraine's Order of Freedom by the President of Ukraine and the American Oxi Courage Award. The European Union also issued a statement regarding her death.
The death of Viktoriia Roshchyna and the conditions of her detention in a Russian SIZO have provoked widespread outrage both in Ukraine and abroad. She has become a symbol of the struggle for free speech and human rights under wartime conditions. The international community's response to her killing underscores the urgent need to continue fighting for the release of other illegally imprisoned Ukrainians and to hold perpetrators accountable for war crimes. These events point to the necessity of sustained international pressure on Russia concerning human rights violations during the conflict.
