Andriy Melnyk's Address to the UN Security Council

According to Главком: During a UN Security Council meeting on February 24, Ukraine's Permanent Representative, Andriy Melnyk, delivered a forceful rebuttal to the Russian Federation's assertions of a historical unity between Ukrainians and Russians. He categorically rejected these claims and refuted the accusations leveled by the Russian delegation. Melnyk presented a series of historical facts, emphasizing that Kyiv, which has stood for over a thousand years, was the capital of a powerful medieval European state at the beginning of the 12th century. This context is crucial for understanding Ukraine's distinct national identity and sovereignty, which long predates modern Russian statehood.

The Russian Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, attempted to justify his country's position, including by making claims about the alleged 'sale' of Kyivan Rus. Andriy Melnyk responded:

"He even muttered something about Kyivan Rus, which we Ukrainians supposedly sold for 30 pieces of silver."

He further noted that at that time, the territory of modern Moscow was merely a swamp 'where frogs croak.'

Ukraine's Stance and Call for Peace

Melnyk stressed that the Russian Federation has failed to achieve any of its strategic goals in the war against Ukraine. He called on the international community to pay attention to the strengthening military ties between Russia and Iran, which he described as a critical danger to international stability.

"Moscow betrayed Kyiv. And to this day, it continues this same cruel policy,"

he stated, drawing attention to the ongoing aggression, including the bombardment of Kyiv.

Melnyk also asserted that Kyiv 'will stand for another thousand [years]. It will prosper, remain undefeated, and Russia will not succeed in subjugating it.' Concluding his speech, he called on the Russian side to withdraw its troops from Ukraine, declaring: 'So take your greatcoats – and get out of Ukraine!' This address reinforced Ukraine's position on the international stage and urged the world community to intensify efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region.

Andriy Melnyk's speech at the UN Security Council meeting demonstrated Ukraine's resolve in countering Russian aggression and attempts to legitimize its position. By highlighting historical facts, he reminded the international community of the importance of supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. This dialogue represents a significant step in mobilizing global attention on the situation in Ukraine and underscores the necessity of collective action to counter aggression and secure peace in the region.

In light of Melnyk's strong condemnation of Russia's historical assertions, it is essential to consider the broader implications of these claims on regional security. His remarks at the UN Security Council also highlighted the alarming support that Russia is providing to Iran, which poses a significant threat to international stability.
