Discovery of a Water Storage Cistern at Teočak Fortress

According to НВ — Техно: During ongoing excavations that began in 2024, archaeologists from the University of Sarajevo uncovered a water cistern within the southern tower of Teočak Fortress, located in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Locally known as the 'čatrnja,' this cistern emerged during the third phase of the dig. Alongside it, researchers revealed expansive halls, a complex network of previously unknown chambers, defensive walls, and masonry extending toward the fortress's central plateau.

Teočak Fortress, situated in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, has a documented history dating back to 1432. Between 1471 and 1477, it was owned by Nikola Iločki, a nobleman linked to the Kingdom of Hungary. By the early 16th century, control shifted to the Ottoman Empire, with the fortress likely abandoned sometime in the first half of the 19th century. This site offers a valuable glimpse into the region’s shifting political and cultural landscape over several centuries.

Archaeological Work and Significant Finds

Led by archaeologist Edin Bujak, the excavation team includes experts from Bosnia, Slovenia, Serbia, and Poland. The project has uncovered numerous artifacts, including:

  • ceramic fragments
  • arrowheads and spear tips
  • tools used in daily labor
  • granite stone balls
  • carved architectural stone pieces

Efforts are now underway to preserve and restore the southern tower to protect the cistern and surrounding masonry, ensuring the fortress’s architectural heritage is safeguarded for future generations.

The discovery of the cistern and associated structures highlights Teočak Fortress’s rich historical significance as a strategic stronghold across different eras. Planned restoration initiatives reflect ongoing commitments to protecting the cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina, providing important insights into the lives of past inhabitants and deepening our understanding of the region’s history.
