Ukraine Braces for Arctic Blast, Kyiv Region to See Temperatures Plummet to -30°C

According to ХВИЛЯ: The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center has issued a warning for a severe cold snap across the country. Snowfall and freezing temperatures are forecast for various regions on January 31. A powerful influx of Arctic air is then expected to hit the Kyiv region and the capital from February 1 to 3, bringing abnormally frigid conditions. This extreme weather event poses a significant challenge to a nation already grappling with the demands of wartime.

Weather Forecast for the Coming Days

On Saturday, January 31, no precipitation is expected in the western, northern, and Vinnytsia regions. Nighttime temperatures there will drop to between -12°C and -17°C, with daytime highs ranging from -9°C to -14°C. In Zakarpattia, temperatures will be milder, from -3°C to +2°C. The southeast will see snow mixed with rain, while the southern, central, and Kharkiv regions are forecast for icy conditions and wet snow accumulation, with temperatures between -5°C and -10°C. In Crimea, the air will warm to +6°C.

The powerful Arctic incursion into the Kyiv region and capital is anticipated from February 1 to 3. The weather during these days will be dictated by a strong anticyclone from Scandinavia. In the first days of February, overnight temperatures in the Kyiv region are predicted to fall to -22°C to -27°C, with localized frosts potentially reaching -30°C. A slight moderation in the cold is expected from February 4.

"This vortex, centered near Scandinavia, formed in Arctic air masses, so dry, cold air will reach us via northern and northeastern flows," notes the Ukrhydrometcenter.

The anticipated deep freeze and Arctic air mass are likely to have a major impact on Ukraine's infrastructure and daily life, particularly affecting:

  • transportation;
  • energy systems;
  • medical services.

Given the abnormally low temperatures, it is crucial to observe safety measures to avoid hypothermia and other cold-related dangers. The deteriorating weather may also impact agriculture, as the severe frost could damage crops. All residents are advised to stay vigilant and prepare for challenging conditions.
