Discovery of Star TOI-5882 by Astronomers

According to НВ — Техно: Researchers have found that star TOI-5882 holds unusually high levels of lithium, a strong indicator that it may have swallowed a planet. The study, led by Brooke Cotten and published in ScienceDaily, highlights how this star stands out from others of its kind due to its elevated lithium concentration.

How a Planet Gets Consumed

The process of a planet being consumed by TOI-5882 takes only a few days or weeks. According to the research, a brown dwarf with a mass over 20 times that of Jupiter orbits this star. The engulfed planet likely had a mass ranging from several Earth masses up to roughly that of Neptune. When comparing TOI-5882 to 62 stars of similar age, mass, and temperature, the team found that it ranks in at least the top 3% for lithium abundance.

Brooke Cotten explained: 'Planets contain far more lithium than stars do. So when a star consumes a planet, it gains an extra supply of this element.'

These findings open up fresh avenues for understanding stellar evolution and how stars interact with their planets.

Interestingly, in about 5 billion years, our Sun will transform into a red giant and may engulf planets like Mercury, Venus, and possibly Earth. This suggests that such events are not limited to distant star systems but could also occur in our own. The study of TOI-5882 provides valuable insights into cosmic phenomena and their consequences.

Detecting elevated lithium levels in star TOI-5882 could significantly impact our understanding of not only this star but also broader galactic processes. This research underscores the importance of star-planet interactions and draws potential parallels to the future of our Solar System. Studying such anomalies may help astronomers better grasp the mechanisms of stellar evolution and how stars influence their surrounding cosmic objects.

As researchers delve deeper into the phenomena of stellar interactions, it's intriguing to consider the fate of our own Solar System. While TOI-5882's consumption of a planet sheds light on cosmic processes, Earth's potential escape from being engulfed by the Sun in its red giant phase offers a fascinating comparison. Understanding these events could enhance our grasp of stellar evolution and planetary survival.
