Massive Assault on Ukraine

According to Главком: Russia launched a major assault against Ukraine overnight on February 3rd, striking energy infrastructure and residential buildings 520 times. The attack targeted Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, and five other regions. According to the European Union's Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Maternova, the barrage involved 450 drones and 70 ballistic and cruise missiles, resulting in significant destruction. This represents one of the largest combined attacks on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure in recent weeks.

Impact on the Civilian Population

In Kyiv, the attacks damaged apartment buildings, a kindergarten, and energy facilities. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that 1,170 multi-story residential buildings were left without heating and electricity amid freezing winter temperatures. In the eastern city of Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov stated that heating was cut off in 820 apartment blocks. In the Odesa region, 50,000 residents were left without power.

Katarina Maternova noted that this attack is another large-scale combined assault, which further underscores Russia's use of winter temperatures as a weapon. She emphasized that heat and electricity have become targets of aggression, calling for attention to the plight of thousands forced to endure the cold in their own homes.

'Winter is not over, and neither are the Russian attacks.' Katarina Maternova

This assault is part of Russia's ongoing strategy to destroy Ukraine's critical infrastructure, severely complicating life for civilians, especially during winter. Amidst freezing conditions, the loss of power and heating can have serious consequences for public health and safety, highlighting the urgent need for measures to protect civilians and restore the energy grid. The targeting of energy systems is a recognized tactic to break civilian morale and strain Ukraine's defense capabilities.

Simultaneously, this incident may lead to intensified international sanctions against Russia and increased support for Ukraine from the global community.
