An-26 Aircraft Crashes in Crimea

According to Главком: The Russian Federation's Ministry of Defense has confirmed a fatal aviation incident in Crimea on March 31. A military transport aircraft, an Antonov An-26, crashed, resulting in the deaths of 29 people, according to preliminary reports. The accident occurred around 6:00 PM Moscow time during a scheduled flight over the Crimean peninsula, when the plane lost contact with ground control.

The ministry stated that a technical malfunction caused the aircraft to crash into a cliff. The fate of the crew and passengers was unknown at the time of the initial announcement. Search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the presumed crash site to begin operations.

Specifications of the An-26 Aircraft

The Antonov An-26 is a Soviet-era twin-engine turboprop military transport plane. Its primary functions include:

  • transporting cargo weighing up to 5,500 kg;
  • carrying 30 to 40 paratroopers;
  • evacuating up to 24 wounded personnel.

The An-26's powerplant consists of two AI-24VT engines, each producing 2,820 horsepower, and one auxiliary RU-19A-300 jet engine. The aircraft has a cruising speed of approximately 430-440 km/h and a maximum speed of 540 km/h. Its maximum takeoff weight is 24,000 kg, with an operational range varying between 1,100 and 2,000 km.

It is capable of reaching an altitude of 7,500 meters. The An-26 measures 23.8 meters in length, with a wingspan of 29.2 meters. A standard crew typically consists of 5 to 6 personnel.

This crash adds to a tragic history of aviation accidents, underscoring the critical importance of aircraft maintenance and safety protocols. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, but details regarding the fate of those on board remain unclear. The An-26 has been a workhorse for military and civilian operators globally for decades, though this incident raises renewed concerns about the safety of aging aircraft fleets. The lack of clear information about the victims and the precise cause highlights the necessity for thorough investigation and proper technical oversight to prevent future tragedies. The public awaits official reports that may clarify the circumstances of this devastating event.
