For the first time, Australian researchers confirmed that heart muscle cells can renew after such damage, revealing a natural repair mechanism that could be enhanced to treat heart failure. This breakthrough came from studying living human heart tissue during coronary bypass surgeries in Sydney.

During a myocardial infarction, up to one-third of heart cells may be destroyed. Previously, it was believed that these damaged cells could not be replaced, and the injured area would be substituted by scar tissue, reducing the heart's pumping ability. However, researchers from the University of Sydney, the Baird Institute, and the Prince Alfred Hospital found that the heart is capable of producing new cardiac muscle cells even after severe injury.

Study Details and Findings

The study confirmed that the increase in mitosis observed in mouse hearts after a heart attack also happens in humans. Scientists examined heart tissue samples from live patients during coronary bypass surgery, analyzing both damaged and healthier areas. The sampling technique was developed by Professors Paul Bannon and Sean Lal.

Heart failure, a condition where the heart cannot pump blood effectively, often develops after a heart attack. The research identified several proteins linked to heart regeneration in mice, which will be further studied as potential targets for future therapies.

Robert Ghum stated, 'Even after scar tissue forms, the heart continues to generate new muscle cells.'
Sean Lal added, 'Our ultimate goal is to create new heart cells that can restore function in patients with heart failure.'

These findings provide promising new avenues for treating heart disease and deepen understanding of the heart's regenerative capabilities. While this discovery does not imply the heart can fully heal itself, it highlights a natural process that could be boosted with medical treatments.
