The Mayor of Kraainem's Initiative

According to Главком: In a significant gesture of support, Bertrand Vercammen, the mayor of the Belgian town of Kraainem, learned the Ukrainian language following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. His goal was to communicate directly with the many Ukrainian refugees who found shelter in his community. To aid their integration, local authorities in Kraainem established adaptation programs, language courses, and provided assistance with employment and schooling for children.

Vercammen emphasized the importance of backing Ukraine, stating: 'Ukraine is defending not only itself, but all of Europe. The least we can do is help Ukraine help us.'

His decision to learn the language is part of a broader trend where people abroad are seeking ways to understand and support Ukrainians during this difficult period. This personal effort highlights a deeper level of commitment beyond standard bureaucratic aid.

Foreigners Embracing the Ukrainian Language

Other notable instances of foreigners learning Ukrainian include:

  • The story of Vadim Kollegov from Nizhnevartovsk, who was captured and learned Ukrainian while in captivity.
  • Yuri Previtali, a 29-year-old Italian who has been fighting with the Armed Forces of Ukraine since 2023. He learned Ukrainian and joined the 'Carpathian Sich' legion, declaring: 'Now this is my war too.'

These examples point to growing international support for Ukraine, where individuals are not only learning the language but also actively participating in the country's defense. In the context of war, such initiatives are powerful demonstrations of solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

Mayor Vercammen's action reflects a wider European trend of supporting Ukrainian refugees, which has intensified since the war began. Many cities and communities across the continent are taking steps to integrate Ukrainians, showcasing a rising sense of shared responsibility. Learning the language and joining military formations are among the most profound expressions of this support, underscoring the critical importance of international cooperation during Ukraine's time of crisis.
