Free HPV Vaccination Program in Ukraine

According to Міністерство Здоров'я: Starting in January 2026, Ukraine will launch a free national vaccination program against HPV (human papillomavirus) infection, made possible by an updated National Immunization Schedule. This initiative is a significant public health advancement for the country. The program will target girls aged 12-13, with vaccinations administered at primary healthcare facilities like outpatient clinics and polyclinics that have contracts with the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU).

To schedule a vaccination, parents must contact their family doctor or pediatrician. The shots will be provided free of charge, and girls in this age group will be eligible for mandatory HPV immunization. It is important to note that for children aged 9 to 14, a single vaccine dose is sufficient to build immunity. For individuals over 15, there are two-dose (0, 6-12 months) and three-dose (0, 6, 12 months) vaccination schedules.

Vaccine Availability for Boys and Girls

While vaccination is medically recommended for boys, it will remain free under the state program only for girls aged 12-13. Boys can receive the vaccine at their own expense in private clinics, through pharmacies, or via regional programs. A girl who completed a Cervarix vaccination course at age 9 will also be eligible for a state-funded, single-dose Gardasil 9 vaccination.

If a child is 13 years old at the time of application (and has not yet turned 14), they are entitled to free vaccination. In case a pediatrician refuses to administer the vaccine, parents are advised to contact the head of the department or the NHSU hotline at 16-77.

The introduction of free HPV vaccination in Ukraine marks a crucial step in combating diseases linked to the virus, particularly cervical cancer.

By focusing on girls aged 12-13, this program aims to increase vaccination rates among the youth, which could significantly reduce future disease incidence. It is vital for parents to be informed about the availability of this service so they can utilize it to protect their children's health.

As Ukraine enhances its public health initiatives with the upcoming free HPV vaccination program, it is also prioritizing other crucial immunizations. Recently, the country secured a significant supply of measles vaccine doses, ensuring that adults can receive their vaccinations at no cost. This commitment to free immunization reflects the government's dedication to protecting the health of its citizens. For more details on the measles vaccination program, visit this article.
