Belarus Initiates Surprise Combat Readiness Check

According to Главком: By order of Alexander Lukashenko, a sudden combat readiness inspection of the Belarusian armed forces has commenced. Military conscripts across the country are receiving summons to report for duty. The Belarusian Ministry of Defense confirmed on February 17 that a call-up of reservists is underway.

Summons are being delivered to men at their places of residence and workplaces. Conscripts are being called up to territorial defense units and active reserve formations. Wives of those summoned report that their husbands are being dispatched quickly, often without being given adequate time to prepare. There are instances of even fathers with many children being taken, including reports of men with four children and those with no prior military service being called up.

Defense Ministry officials state that these operational and combat training measures are primarily linked to the actions and aggressive rhetoric of Western nations, which they claim openly declare intentions to prepare for war. Military representative Valery Revenko emphasized that Belarus is also conducting measures to prepare its armed forces to repel aggression, stressing that these are not aggressive or offensive actions.

Context Within International Relations

This development occurs against the backdrop of Ukrainian sanctions targeting Lukashenko, as well as within the context of Russian military forces deploying relay systems for controlling strike drones on Belarusian territory in the second half of 2025. This move is seen as part of Belarus's deepening military integration with Russia, its key ally.

Recent events in Belarus point to rising regional tensions and the country's preparation for potential military conflict. The sudden readiness drill may be a response to deteriorating relations with Western countries and the increased Russian military presence in the region. Under conditions of sanctions and political isolation, Belarus is seeking to demonstrate its military preparedness, a development that could have serious implications for security in Central and Eastern Europe.
