According to Radiotrek — Світ: Astronomers have for the first time confirmed the existence of a wandering supermassive black hole after it shredded a star on the outskirts of a galaxy. Supermassive black holes are typically lodged at galactic centers, making this detection far from the core especially unusual. The event was captured by NASA's Swift space observatory along with a network of ground-based telescopes.

How the Rogue Black Hole Was Found

The intense flash from the star’s destruction-caused by the black hole’s immense gravity-was recorded by the Zwicky Transient Facility’s cameras. An artificial intelligence algorithm sifted through hundreds of thousands of observations, flagged the signal, and identified it as a rare tidal disruption event. Follow-up observations in optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray wavelengths confirmed that a supermassive black hole had indeed ripped the star apart.

This discovery ranks among the very few confirmed cases of a wandering supermassive black hole. Scientists believe many more such objects may exist across the universe, having been displaced from galaxy centers through collisions or other cosmic processes. By revealing itself through the destruction of a star on the galactic periphery, this black hole opens up new avenues for exploring the cosmos.
