Bulgaria Appeals to the European Union for Assistance

According to Главком: Bulgaria has formally requested the European Union's help in countering Russian interference ahead of its parliamentary elections. Last week, Bulgarian officials petitioned the EU's diplomatic service, asking it to activate a rapid response system under the Digital Services Act (DSA). This mechanism is designed to facilitate negotiations with major platforms like Meta, Google, and TikTok to identify and halt disinformation campaigns. The European Commission has confirmed the process is now underway.

Political Shifts in Bulgaria Provide Context

In preparation for the elections scheduled for April 19, Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry has established a temporary unit to coordinate responses to foreign interference. The unit includes investigative journalist Christo Grozev, known for his prior work with the Bellingcat group. This new body aims to ensure effective action against disinformation and external meddling.

This request comes during a period of political transition in Bulgaria. A new caretaker government, led by Andrey Gurov, began its work after the previous cabinet resigned in December following large-scale protests against an unpopular draft annual budget. Prime Minister Gurov is expected to initiate personnel changes in the prosecutor's office, which could affect the position of acting Chief Prosecutor Borislav Sarafov. Sarafov has faced criticism over his office's information policy regarding criminal cases linked to two triple murders in the country's northwest.

These developments unfold as Bulgaria prepares for its eighth general election since 2021, highlighting the critical need for political stability and a robust defense against external threats. The country's appeal to Brussels reflects a broader European concern over foreign influence operations targeting democratic processes. The creation of a specialized anti-disinformation unit underscores the growing importance of media literacy and transparency in safeguarding elections.
