The meeting took place after the ambassador was called in over a drone incident near the Kardam area.

Petrova said the unauthorized entry into Bulgarian airspace was unacceptable and voiced serious concern. Bulgarian officials asked Kyiv to hand over all available information to determine what happened and to take steps to prevent a repeat. Ilashchuk responded that Ukraine had not sent drones toward Bulgaria deliberately and confirmed that Kyiv was ready to help clarify the circumstances. After the drone appeared, Sofia kept in touch with Romania and updated EU foreign ministers. Bulgaria also expects to exchange the latest information with NATO allies in the coming days.

Known Facts Behind the Drone Incident

Early on 8 August, an unidentified drone exploded and landed in a field next to the former Kardam border checkpoint, around 100 meters from the Romanian border and one kilometer from the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline's compressor station. Ukraine's foreign ministry said Kyiv was in contact with the Bulgarian side to determine all details. The Ukrainian defense forces said they had not deliberately aimed any assets at Bulgaria.
