Budanov Turns Down Polish Award After Zelenskyy Honor Sparks Diplomatic Row
Award Refusal Amid Political Tensions
According to Главком: Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s Office of the President, has announced he will decline the Golden Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. This decision follows Polish President Karol Nawrocki’s move to strip Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle. Alongside Budanov, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has also turned down a Polish decoration.
Kyrylo Budanov stated: 'I am rejecting the Golden Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, awarded to me last year by the Polish President. I am certain that Ukrainian society-both military and civilian-shares these sentiments and will support this step.'
Budanov shared his perspective, noting: 'Unfortunately, Polish President Karol Nawrocki has committed an unfriendly act toward our nation by revoking the Order of the White Eagle previously awarded to the President of Ukraine. This is undoubtedly a gift to the Moscow aggressor, which it will certainly use against both our countries.'
He further emphasized: 'Our peoples share a long history with both heroic and tragic chapters. However, this should be a reason for deep reflection, not crude political speculation.' Budanov added: 'Ukraine will undoubtedly assess this event. Yet despite everything, we will firmly uphold the principles of open partnership with all our allies-an equal partnership based on mutual respect.'
Polish PM's Reaction
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticized Nawrocki’s decision, urging against escalating tensions between Warsaw and Kyiv. The situation surrounding the awards and Ukraine-Poland relations remains strained, raising concerns in both nations. This report comes from the outlet Glavcom.
The refusal of Polish honors by Ukrainian officials may signal a deterioration in bilateral ties that were previously seen as crucial for both countries, especially in the context of Russian aggression. The Polish prime minister's response to these events indicates that Warsaw also recognizes the need to maintain constructive dialogue and preserve partnership amid shared challenges. This underscores the importance of diplomatic efforts to resolve disputes and sustain regional stability.
The ongoing diplomatic tensions between Ukraine and Poland have sparked significant reactions from both sides. For instance, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has publicly condemned the decision to strip Zelenskyy of his award, highlighting the need for maintaining a constructive dialogue to ease the strain in bilateral relations. This development underscores the complexities surrounding the recent award refusals and their implications for future cooperation between the two nations.
