Rising Right-Wing Influence in Europe Spurs Some Ukrainian Refugees to Consider Returning Amid Labor Needs

Potential Return of Ukrainian Refugees

According to Radiotrek — Світ: Ella Libanova, head of the Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, highlighted that a portion of Ukrainian refugees currently abroad might plan to return home. This inclination is partly driven by concerns over the growing strength of right-wing political groups across Europe.

“Some Ukrainian refugees may be contemplating a return not only out of a desire to reunite with their homeland but also due to fears about the rising influence of right-wing parties in Europe,” Libanova explained.

She further noted that many refugees worry about the possibility of right-wing forces gaining power, as these groups often oppose migration.

Temporary Protection Policies and Economic Interests

Regarding the EU’s temporary protection framework for Ukrainians, Libanova clarified that new male applicants of conscription age without valid exemptions will not be granted this status. However, those who have already received temporary protection will not lose it automatically, as revoking such protection requires complex legal procedures, which complicates the process of returning to Ukraine.

Libanova also emphasized Europe’s economic reliance on Ukrainian workers. Due to labor shortages and an aging population, European employers value the contributions of Ukrainian migrants.

“European businesses depend on Ukrainians amid workforce deficits and demographic decline,” she emphasized.

According to her, Ukrainians account for a significant share of added economic value, especially in countries like Poland. The income earned by Ukrainians abroad is frequently spent locally, bolstering host nations’ economies.

She cautioned against financial incentives encouraging refugees to return without offering equivalent support to internally displaced persons within Ukraine. This remains a critical issue, as the movement of refugees back home could have profound social and economic impacts both in Ukraine and across European countries.

The potential repatriation of Ukrainian refugees could play a key role in Ukraine’s economic recovery. At the same time, it presents challenges for European nations currently dependent on migrant labor to address demographic shifts. Ensuring equitable treatment for all displaced individuals underscores the need for a comprehensive policy approach. Governments and international bodies must carefully navigate these dynamics to maintain regional stability.
