Heating Crisis in Kyiv

According to Главком: Following a Russian missile strike that caused critical damage to the Darnytsia Thermal Power Plant (TPP-4), schools in Kyiv's Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi districts have switched to remote learning. Approximately 45% of educational institutions in these areas are without heating due to the damage sustained by the plant. Repairing the district heating system is expected to take at least two months. This attack is part of a wider Russian campaign targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure, which has severely impacted civilian life during winter.

The most severe heating shortages are concentrated in the Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi districts. Across Kyiv, 153 educational buildings, or 15% of the total, remain without heat due to January attacks. The Darnytsia TPP supplied heat to more than 1,100 apartment buildings, meaning its damage has affected a significant portion of the city's population. On the morning of February 3, water was drained from residential heating systems after the facility sustained critical damage from a strike that occurred earlier that day.

The damage to Darnytsia TPP-4 has serious consequences not only for education but for all residents who relied on the station for heat. Restoring the heating system is a priority, but the lengthy repairs mean the situation in Kyiv will remain critical. Given the risk of worsening outage schedules, clear communication between parents, educational institutions, and the city administration is vital for effectively planning children's education during this difficult period.
