A 14th-century Orthodox merchant from Trebizond, John once engaged in a heated religious debate with a non-believing ship captain during a voyage. After arriving in Bilhorod-present-day Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi in Ukraine-the captain falsely accused John before the local ruler, a follower of fire worship.

Refusing to renounce Christ or bow to pagan idols, John was tortured and executed. Today, he is revered as the heavenly protector of entrepreneurs and travelers. On this day, the faithful pray to him with these words:

“O holy Great Martyr John! Look down from your heavenly dwelling upon us who need your help, and hear our supplications…”
