The price of autogas has sharply increased in Ukraine: what to expect next
In Ukraine, a sharp rise in autogas prices has been recorded. In just a few weeks, the average cost of fuel has increased by 3.5 UAH per liter and reached 37.95 UAH/l. This is the highest indicator in recent years, not counting the beginning of the full-scale war. Today.ua reports.
Autogas prices in Ukraine: the main reason for the increase
Fuel market analysts explain the price increase primarily by the rise in excise taxes starting January 1, 2026. The excise for liquefied gas has increased from 173 to 198 euros per 1000 liters. Excise taxes on gasoline and diesel have also increased, but autogas has reacted the quickest.
According to Alexander Sirenko, an analyst at the consulting company 'NaftoRynok', in terms of retail prices, the excise has added:
- about 1.5 UAH/l to the cost of autogas;
- approximately 1.8 UAH/l for gasoline;
- up to 2.2 UAH/l for diesel fuel.
He notes that autogas historically has the lowest margin, so gas station operators quickly passed the increase in costs onto the end consumer.
Autogas prices in 2026: expert forecasts
Vladimir Omelyanenko, director of energy programs at the Razumkov Center, emphasizes that there is no autogas deficit in Ukraine. According to him, gas stations simply compensated for the new tax burdens. He also predicts a stabilization of prices in the near future if the exchange rate remains relatively stable.
At the same time, Alexander Sirenko is less optimistic. He believes that the autogas market operates 'on the fly' and hardly forms reserves, making it sensitive to changes in wholesale prices. According to his estimates, additional growth is possible in the near future by at least another 1.5 UAH per liter.
Gasoline and diesel currently show a much more restrained price dynamics, as these segments have larger reserves and higher margins, allowing operators to respond more flexibly to tax changes.
Let us remind you that starting January 1 in Ukraine, excise duties on fuel have increased.
