An Analysis of Ukraine's Citrus Imports and Berry Exports

According to Главком: Market analysis reveals significant trends in Ukraine's fruit trade. According to the State Customs Service and the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association, Turkey maintained its position as the leading supplier of citrus fruits to Ukraine in 2025, with shipments totaling 139.2 thousand tons. This figure represents only a slight decline from 2021, when Turkey also held the top spot with supplies of 192.6 thousand tons.

Other major citrus exporters to the Ukrainian market in 2025 included:

  • Egypt – 49.7 thousand tons
  • South Africa – 27.3 thousand tons
  • Greece – 15.9 thousand tons
  • Spain – 13 thousand tons
  • China – 11.9 thousand tons

Together with bananas, citrus fruits account for nearly two-thirds of the total value of Ukraine's fruit imports, underscoring their market importance. This reliance on imported fruit highlights a key aspect of Ukraine's agricultural trade balance.

Simultaneously, Ukraine has been the world's largest exporter of frozen raspberries for two consecutive years, with its overseas shipments showing consistent growth. Blueberry production is also demonstrating positive annual growth, although the domestic market for blueberries is nearing saturation.

Taras Bashtannyk notes: 'Ukrainian farmers are increasingly focusing on exports, as domestic consumption has almost stopped growing.'

These trends indicate a strategic shift among Ukrainian agricultural producers as they adapt to new market conditions and seek opportunities to expand export potential. The rising export of berries, particularly frozen raspberries, points to the success of Ukrainian farmers on the international stage and growing foreign interest in their products. The stagnation in domestic consumption is likely prompting a review of production strategies, with a greater emphasis on exports and the search for new markets.

In addition to the notable trends in citrus imports, it's essential to examine the overall landscape of fruit imports to Ukraine. The latest data indicates that in 2025, the country imported 725,000 tons of fruit, amounting to $922.6 million. This significant influx of fruit underscores the growing demand and changing consumption patterns within the market.
