12-Year Sentence Handed Down in Chornukhy District

According to Главком: A resident of the Chornukhy district in Poltava region has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempting to murder a law enforcement officer. The incident occurred on October 21, 2025, when the accused threatened police officers and fired a sawed-off rifle, hitting a civilian vehicle. His motive was to provoke the officers into using lethal force against him.

Details of the Incident

Around 4:00 PM, two police officers were conducting preventive patrols in the town center when the accused shouted, 'Cops, you're dead, I'll kill you.' One officer spotted what appeared to be a firearm and tried to kick it out of the man's hands. A shot was fired, striking a civilian car. The officer tackled the suspect to the ground while his partner called for backup. A local resident helped disarm the accused.

According to reports, an hour before the shooting, the accused had already clashed with other officers and showed signs of alcohol intoxication. He pulled on the door handle of a police vehicle, grabbed an officer's uniform, and tore off and threw a body camera. He also stated he would shoot an officer in the forehead. In response, an officer used pepper spray. The incident was confirmed by footage from a police body camera.

The accused claimed he did not intend to kill the officer, only to scare him into shooting him. He explained that after his wife's death, he sought ways to end his life but avoided suicide because he considered it a sin.

“Life has no meaning after my wife's death,”

the accused stated. His daughter testified in court that her father tolerates alcohol poorly and 'barely drinks it.' Neighbors described him as a calm and balanced person.

The court considered all circumstances and sentenced the accused to 12 years in prison for multiple offenses. For context, similar rulings have been issued in other cases. For instance, the Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced Ukrainian Roman Kliukin to 22 years for espionage and terrorism, while two servicemen from the 12th Special Forces Brigade Azov received 24 and 26 years, respectively.

This case highlights the severe consequences of violence against law enforcement and the potential outcomes for offenders. As tensions between civilians and police rise, it is crucial to examine mechanisms that could prevent escalation. At the same time, society must remain aware of the repercussions of aggressive behavior, particularly under the influence of alcohol. This incident may spark further discussions on safety and law and order in communities.

The complexities of violent incidents involving law enforcement are often highlighted in similar cases across the country. For instance, a recent ruling by the Kyiv Appeals Court reaffirmed a life sentence for a double murder, underlining the judicial system's stance on severe crimes. Such cases reflect the broader societal issues surrounding violence and mental health, making it essential to understand the context behind these tragic events.
