Chernobyl pensioners will lose thousands of hryvnias: the government changed the procedure for payments

Pensioners receive lower payments
Літні люди з Чорнобиля опинилися під загрозою фінансових втрат через зміни в виплатах.

The government has decided to reduce payments for non-working pensioners from the Chernobyl zone starting in 2025. Currently, the supplement will amount to 2,361 hryvnias per month, which is a significant decrease compared to previous payments.

The Ministry of Social Policy is considering the possibility of establishing a fixed payment of 2,361 hryvnias irrespective of the place of residence. Attention is also focused on the possibility of providing an additional payment for families with suburban plots in contaminated areas.

'This additional payment will be of limited duration (...) and will not be reviewed taking into account inflation,' the agency explained.

Law No. 796 provides for a number of benefits for Chernobyl victims, which depend on the average monthly income of the family. Since 2015, part of the benefits has been provided taking into account the total income, but there are categories that receive benefits without this restriction.

'The general rule about a unified approach to accounting for incomes does not apply to combatants and persons with disabilities as a result of war,' the agency emphasized.

The government has reduced payments for Chernobyl victims, is considering changes in the calculation of supplements, as well as the possibility of providing additional payments for families in contaminated areas. The government's actions are aimed at optimizing the system of social protection and benefits for this category of citizens.
