Denmark's Reception of Ukrainian Refugees

According to Radiotrek — Світ: Five municipalities in Denmark-Haderslev, Horsens, Skive, Struer, and Viborg-have agreed to welcome an additional 133 Ukrainian refugees. These communities, located in the Jutland region, aim to alleviate pressure on housing availability in Copenhagen and its western suburbs. The decision is driven by the availability of accommodation and the local employers' demand for workers.

Restrictions on Residency Permits for Certain Ukrainian Regions

While some Danish communities are open to accepting refugees, the Danish government plans to limit residency permit eligibility for Ukrainians coming from 14 regions deemed less affected by the conflict. These regions include:

  • Cherkasy
  • Chernivtsi
  • Ivano-Frankivsk
  • Khmelnytskyi
  • Kirovohrad
  • Kyiv Oblast
  • Lviv
  • Poltava
  • Rivne
  • Ternopil
  • Vinnytsia
  • Volyn
  • Zakarpattia
  • Zhytomyr

The proposed changes would remove the right for Ukrainians from these areas to obtain residence permits under Denmark's Special Law on Ukraine. Notably, the city of Kyiv itself is excluded from this restriction, as the limitation applies only to the Kyiv Oblast.

Furthermore, the Danish Parliament has passed legislation barring newly arriving Ukrainian men aged 23 to 60 from entering the country. Denmark's Minister for Immigration and Integration, Morten Bødskov, emphasized:

“Welcoming Ukrainians and integrating them into local communities is a shared responsibility.”

These developments have sparked concern among human rights advocates and could complicate the situation for Ukrainian refugees seeking safety in Denmark. The measures reflect Denmark's efforts to balance humanitarian support with controlled immigration policies. On one hand, some municipalities demonstrate readiness and resources to integrate refugees, while on the other, the new entry and residency limits may pose challenges for many Ukrainians and fuel ongoing debates about Denmark's humanitarian commitments.
