The holiday's origins are rooted in the events of 2014. On March 14th of that year, the first 500 volunteers of the Maidan Self-Defense arrived at the Novi Petrivtsi training ground to form the initial volunteer battalion. This act marked the beginning of organized volunteer formations that would become integral to Ukraine's defense. Following this, on January 17, 2017, the Verkhovna Rada passed a decree to institute Volunteer Day.
