Volunteer Day in Ukraine

According to Главком: Ukraine marks Volunteer Day annually on March 14th. This national holiday was established by the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, in 2017. Its creation was a crucial step in formally recognizing the immense contributions of volunteers to national defense, particularly during times of armed conflict. The holiday honors the spirit of grassroots mobilization that has been vital to Ukraine's resilience.

The holiday's origins are rooted in the events of 2014. On March 14th of that year, the first 500 volunteers of the Maidan Self-Defense arrived at the Novi Petrivtsi training ground to form the initial volunteer battalion. This act marked the beginning of organized volunteer formations that would become integral to Ukraine's defense. Following this, on January 17, 2017, the Verkhovna Rada passed a decree to institute Volunteer Day. The initiative was led by 12 members of parliament, including then-Speaker Andriy Parubiy and Euromaidan activist Mykhailo Havryliuk.

The Role of Volunteers in Defending Ukraine

Volunteer battalions and units, which were rapidly assembled and deployed to conflict zones, formed the backbone of a capable fighting force that halted the enemy's advance into mainland Ukraine. This pivotal role is highlighted in the explanatory note to the parliamentary decree. Notable military units that participated in the defense of Donetsk Airport include:

  • The 'Azov' Regiment, formed in Mariupol in May 2014
  • 3rd Separate Regiment
  • 79th Separate Air Assault Brigade
  • 80th Separate Air Assault Brigade
  • 81st Separate Air Assault Brigade
  • 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade
  • 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade
  • 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade
  • 1st Separate Tank Brigade
  • 57th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade
  • 91st Separate Regiment
  • 90th Separate Air Assault Battalion
  • 74th Separate Reconnaissance Battalion
  • Dnipro-1 Regiment
  • Ukrainian Volunteer Corps (DUK)
  • OUN Battalion

The tradition of volunteerism continues, as evidenced by the formation of the 'Offensive Guard' starting in February 2023. Volunteer Day has become a symbol of the courage, bravery, and self-sacrifice of those who defend Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity. It serves as a powerful reminder of how Ukrainian society unites for a common cause during conflict, honoring those who risked their lives and underscoring the ongoing need to support the volunteer movement. The day is now a key element of national identity and collective memory, commemorating the heroism of fellow citizens.
