Tragedy in Olenivka and Honoring the Fallen

It is reported that the date July 28 was chosen in memory of the tragedy in Olenivka. It is known that on the night of July 29, 2022, as a result of a terrorist attack by Russian troops, more than 53 Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed.

They were defenders of 'Azovstal'. According to the Prosecutor General's Office, at least 130 more people were injured.

Details of the Attack in the Colony

The explanatory note states that this day is intended to honor the memory of the deceased and to contribute to the preservation of historical memory, support for the families of the deceased, and the formation of patriotism.

Let us remind you, an internal analysis by the United Nations confirms that the attack in the Olenivka colony in the occupied territory of Donetsk, which resulted in the deaths of more than 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war in July 2022, was a pre-planned attack carried out by the armed forces of the Russian Federation.

The UN report states that the shelling was carried out with thermobaric shells, which are part of the munitions in the arsenal of the Russian army.

  • One of the shells hit the roof of the barrack, another – near the entrance, causing a powerful fire and shrapnel injuries among the prisoners.
  • The shells had delayed-action detonators, which allowed for maximum effectiveness of the destruction.

According to the analysis, the fire was directed from an artillery system, with the probable launch site being the village of Lyubivka, located just 2.3 km from the colony in the temporarily occupied territory.

The Parliament of Ukraine adopted a resolution to commemorate the annual Day of Remembrance for the defenders of Ukraine, participants of volunteer formations, and civilians who perished, were tortured, or executed in captivity. This initiative was founded to honor the memory of the deceased, support their families, and foster patriotism. The date of July 28 was chosen as a symbol of the tragedy in the Olenivka colony, where more than 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed as a result of a terrorist attack by Russian troops, and more than 130 others were injured.
