Claims of Mobilizing an Israeli Citizen at Ukraine’s Border Disproved

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Israeli media recently reported that an Israeli citizen was mobilized at the Ukrainian border. However, Ukraine’s border service clarified that the detained individual, 49-year-old Yonatan Karlinski Mashek, is actually a Ukrainian citizen wanted for military service and was handed over to the National Police of Ukraine for further investigation.

On September 16, border officials stopped Yonatan Karlinski Mashek at the Ukraine-Romania border. Born in Ukraine and holding a Ukrainian passport, he had traveled to Uman to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and was returning to Israel. During document verification, authorities discovered that he was listed as a military reservist wanted for service.

The Ukrainian State Border Guard Service confirmed no mobilization procedures were conducted at the passport control checkpoint. They emphasized that foreign nationals crossing the border are not subject to checks regarding military obligations in Ukraine.

“Reports in the media claiming the mobilization of an Israeli citizen at the border are false and misleading. If a person presents a foreign passport at border control but is identified as a Ukrainian citizen, all legal responsibilities that apply to Ukrainian citizens, including military registration, apply to them,” explained Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the Border Guard Service.

Furthermore, the Border Guard Service stressed that no mobilization of a foreign citizen took place directly at the border crossing. Yonatan Karlinski left Ukraine for Israel 14 years ago and communicated with Ukrainian authorities in Ukrainian during the border check.

Current Border Situation

It is important to note that the Ukraine-Romania border remains the primary route for illegal crossings. Since the start of this year, border guards have apprehended 5,000 individuals attempting unauthorized border crossings, including a 24-year-old man fleeing conscription into the Russian military.
