How Wildfire Smoke Affects Overall Health

According to НВ — Техно: Wildfire smoke does more than damage the lungs-it also threatens the heart and brain. Long-term exposure to this polluted air increases the likelihood of stroke, cardiovascular disease, preterm birth, and cancer. According to the U.S. National Interagency Fire Center, more than 1.5 million hectares have burned across the country since the start of 2026. That figure is more than double the average annual area consumed by wildfires three decades ago. Research links wildfire smoke to over 24,100 deaths each year in the United States between 2006 and 2020, and projects 1.9 million premature deaths between 2026 and 2055.

What’s in the Smoke and Its Consequences

Wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter known as PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, aromatic hydrocarbons, and lead. Prolonged exposure to PM2.5 from wildfire smoke raises the risk of stroke in older adults. As Yang Liu, an environmental health researcher at Emory University, explains:

“Smoke is not just a respiratory hazard. It triggers oxidative stress in the body, which can accelerate the development of various diseases.” - Yang Liu

Another study published in Nature in 2025 predicts that between 2026 and 2055, smoke carrying PM2.5 particles could cause roughly 1.9 million early deaths.

Research also shows that smoke induces oxidative stress, which may lead to chronic and autoimmune conditions. During pregnancy, smoke exposure increases the chances of preterm birth and low birth weight. Yang Liu adds:

“Studies have not found a safe level of chronic smoke exposure.” - Yang Liu

When wildfires spread through populated areas, the smoke becomes even more dangerous, carrying toxic substances like plastics, heavy metals, arsenic, and other harmful compounds into the air.

Given these findings, it is critical to address the growing threat of wildfires, as their smoke can have severe public health consequences. Declining air quality due to wildfires is a global issue that demands not only scientific investigation but also coordinated action by governments and international organizations to reduce risks and protect people’s health.
