Ukraine’s Diplomatic Academy Revives Master’s Program After Nearly a Decade

According to МЗС: In Kyiv, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha officially inaugurated the new academic year at the Hennadii Udovenko Diplomatic Academy. This year marks the relaunch of the academy’s master’s degree program after a nine-year hiatus. The inaugural class of the 'International Relations and Diplomacy' master’s program includes 32 students. The ceremony was also attended by Slovenia’s Foreign Minister Tone Kajzer, members of the international diplomatic corps, and Ukrainian diplomats.

Minister Sybiha emphasized that the academy is not just resuming a master’s curriculum but reinstating a full diplomatic training cycle, which is vital for advancing Ukraine’s diplomatic education. He highlighted,

"The academy must become a place where knowledge, practical experience, and strategic thinking converge."

Sybiha further addressed key themes shaping modern Ukrainian diplomacy, including Ukraine’s evolving global role, innovative diplomatic approaches, and strengthening the Anti-Ballistic Coalition.

A Symbolic Opening and Commitment to International Partnerships

As part of the opening ceremony, Minister Sybiha struck a ceremonial hammer once used by Hennadii Udovenko to open sessions of the UN General Assembly. Over its first two decades, the academy has graduated more than a thousand foreign policy masters, and this year, over 500 employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are enrolled in its programs.

Sybiha expressed gratitude to Slovenia for its steadfast support of Ukraine, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve lasting and just peace. Slovenian Foreign Minister Tone Kajzer reaffirmed Slovenia’s backing of Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union, stating,

"Slovenia firmly believes that Ukraine’s rightful place is within the European Union."

The event concluded with a performance by Ukrainian pianist Taras Filenko. Discussions also took place regarding future cooperation between the diplomatic academies of Ukraine and Slovenia, alongside plans to commemorate 35 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The restoration of the master’s program at Ukraine’s Diplomatic Academy reflects the country’s determination to strengthen its diplomatic corps amid contemporary challenges. Training a new generation of international relations experts is expected to enhance Ukraine’s foreign policy effectiveness and support its integration into European frameworks. Partnerships with international allies, particularly Slovenia, highlight the critical role of global cooperation in Ukraine’s current geopolitical context.
