Ukraine's Mineral Resources

According to Главком: With an estimated $3.8 trillion worth of mineral resources, the Donetsk region is Ukraine's most resource-rich area. This valuation is based on the 54 mineral deposits located there, which include:

  • Coal
  • Dolomite
  • Limestone
  • Antimony-mercury ores
  • Refractory clays

Other key regions follow closely: Dnipropetrovsk ranks second with $3.5 trillion, and Luhansk is third with $3.2 trillion. In total, Ukraine possesses over 111 billion tons of mineral resources, a significant economic asset. The immense value of these deposits underscores their strategic importance in the ongoing conflict.

Intensified Mining Activity

In the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk, the Russian-installed administration is preparing to issue licenses for extracting minerals like clay, limestone, and sand. Concurrently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a law ratifying a minerals agreement with the United States. Meanwhile, the Russian government has moved to ban the public release of maps detailing mineral deposit locations.

These developments point to heightened activity and competition in Ukraine's mining sector. In the context of war and instability, control over these resources remains a crucial economic and strategic factor. The licensing moves in occupied areas suggest attempts to control the region's natural wealth, while the U.S. agreement could help attract foreign investment for modernizing Ukraine's extractive industry post-conflict.
