Ukrainian Drone Forces Strike 12 Vessels in Russia’s Shadow Fleet Operating in the Black Sea
Operation MoLoChKa
According to ХВИЛЯ: On July 17, drones from the Unmanned Systems Forces launched a significant attack, hitting 12 ships belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet in the Black Sea. This mission, dubbed Operation MoLoChKa, disabled a total of 159 vessels across both the Black and Azov Seas over a 12-day period. Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, Robert Brovdi, provided detailed commentary on the strikes’ impact, which also brought maritime traffic through the Azov-Don Canal to a halt.
Aftermath of the Strikes
The July 17 attack resulted in damage to:
- nine cargo ships,
- one tanker,
- one gas carrier tanker, and
- one tugboat.
In total, throughout the operation, 117 vessels were incapacitated in the Azov Sea and 42 in the Black Sea. Crucially, these strikes forced a shutdown of navigation along the Azov-Don Sea Canal, severely disrupting the transport of goods in the region.

Brovdi also emphasized the operation’s resilience, stating: 'We will stand firm. Moscow will fall, MoLoChKa is in action. We will feed and rebuild Crimea.' Up to 30% of Russia’s grain exports were shipped from the Rostov region, underscoring the strategic importance of controlling maritime transport in the current context.
Operation MoLoChKa and its outcomes highlight the critical role of dominating sea lanes in the region, which could significantly impact Russia’s economic situation, particularly regarding grain exports. The suspension of navigation along the Azov-Don Canal reveals serious challenges for trade operations, with potential repercussions for the global food market. These events also underscore new challenges and opportunities for Ukraine as it continues to fight for its independence and economic stability.
The recent success of Operation MoLoChKa is part of a broader strategy to disrupt Russian maritime operations. In a related incident, Ukrainian forces targeted 21 Russian tankers in a night strike on the Sea of Azov, further illustrating the escalating tension in the region.
