After 18 Months, Soldier's Wife Spots Husband in Captivity Footage

Soldier's wife recognized husband in captivity
Після півтора року, дружина військового впізнає чоловіка у кадрах з полону.

The Story of Olha Piroh

According to Главком: Olha Piroh, the wife of a Ukrainian soldier, identified her missing husband in a video from Russian captivity a year and a half after he disappeared. Volodymyr Piroh, who had voluntarily joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine, went missing on the front lines in December 2023. Olha finally discovered his whereabouts 18 months later when she recognized him in footage posted on Telegram channels. This identification was later corroborated by soldiers freed during a prisoner exchange on May 6, 2025. However, no official confirmation from Russia regarding Volodymyr Piroh's status as a prisoner of war has been received. The ongoing war has left thousands of families in a state of agonizing uncertainty about the fate of their loved ones.

The Search and Its Challenges

Olha Piroh explained that contact with her husband was lost in December 2023. Letters that later arrived indicated he was first held in Luhansk before being transferred to Bashkortostan. She described the moment she saw him in the video:

“On Easter, I was scrolling through a Telegram channel, I saw a photo – and suddenly something inside me clicked. It's captivity, it's definitely him. It was a photograph somewhere in a bathroom, but you could see up to his beard: I can recognize him by his hands, his posture, how he sits. By his high boots: I personally bought them for him to wear. I have a pair at home, for when he returns.” - Olha Piroh

Olha added that searching for her husband has now become even more difficult, as he could be deep inside Russia, potentially in Altai or Bashkortostan. She emphasized:

“My letters were going to Luhansk, but his name was crossed off – and he was sent to Bashkortostan. They have been scattered very widely. If no one is freed from there, I won't know anything about my husband.” - Olha Piroh

This case highlights the immense difficulty and uncertainty faced by the families of soldiers captured in the conflict. It serves as a stark example of the challenges confronting the relatives of missing personnel during a protracted war. The lack of official information on the status of prisoners underscores severe communication and information-sharing problems between the warring parties, reminding us of the critical need for international oversight and support regarding humanitarian law, especially concerning prisoners of war and their families.
