Outlook for the Conflict in Ukraine

According to Главком: Historian and Russia specialist Matthias Uhl has painted a grim picture of the war in Ukraine, suggesting it could devolve into what he calls an 'endless drone war.' His analysis, featured in the German publication Bild, indicates that the current war of attrition shows no signs of a swift conclusion. Uhl predicts the situation will likely deteriorate further, potentially leading to the conscription of men aged 18 to 25-a group currently exempt from mandatory military service in Ukraine.

Resource Constraints and Mobilization Challenges

According to the expert, Ukraine faces a severe disadvantage in terms of manpower. The country lacks sufficient personnel to launch any major offensive operations. Meanwhile, Russia continues to sustain its war effort through its own resources, and the systemic collapse that Western nations anticipated has not materialized. Uhl emphasizes that Moscow can still recruit troops through other means, which could trigger another round of partial mobilization within Russia.

The analyst also highlights the growing difficulty of countering drone attacks, noting that no effective methods currently exist to neutralize the overwhelming presence of unmanned aerial vehicles.

'They will first need to be destroyed on the battlefield before any successful offensive can occur. Due to high costs, only lasers or machine guns will remain viable options,' states Matthias Uhl.

He further warns that in the war between Russia and Ukraine, one side may 'realize too late that the end is near.' A shortage of soldiers, particularly infantry, is likely to become a critical issue for Ukraine, given its reliance on Western weapons and intelligence. As a last resort, the country may be forced to mobilize men aged 18 to 25, underscoring the severe challenges facing the Ukrainian military.

Uhl's forecasts highlight the gravity of the situation in Ukraine and the potential scenarios for the conflict's evolution. The protracted nature of the war and the scarcity of human resources could significantly shape military operations and strategies for both sides. While Ukraine depends on Western support, issues with mobilization and resource availability may become decisive for its future defensive capabilities.

As the conflict evolves, understanding the broader implications of military strategies becomes crucial. Insights from historians about how Ukraine might reshape its military approach by 2026 can provide valuable context to the current situation, highlighting the potential shifts in warfare dynamics and resource allocation in the ongoing battle.
