Analyst Warns of 6-8 Hour Daily Power Cuts in Ukraine by Summer 2026

Plan for power outages in summer
Експерт прогнозує, що в Україні можуть впровадити щоденні відключення електроенергії тривалістю 6-8 годин вже влітку 2026 року.

Forecast for Ukraine's Electricity Supply in Summer 2026

According to ХВИЛЯ: Analyst Oleh Popenko has warned that Ukraine could face prolonged daily power outages lasting 6 to 8 hours during the summer of 2026. This projection, made during a live broadcast on March 26, 2026, accounts for a systemic energy deficit driven by scheduled generator repairs and rising consumption, even without factoring in potential damage from shelling. The country's energy grid, already strained by war, faces a critical test from these combined pressures.

Key Factors Threatening Grid Stability

Oleh Popenko, an expert in utilities and energy, noted that while a nationwide blackout remains unlikely, the planned shutdown of nuclear power units for major maintenance will be a primary driver of the electricity shortfall. He emphasized that power consumption could surge by 50% heading into the summer season.

“Understand that consumption will increase by 50% by summer. I don't think a large number of new capacities will be introduced, I mean at least repaired old ones,” the expert stated.

He identified several key factors that will strain the power network:

  • widespread use of air conditioners during hot weather;
  • ongoing attacks on high-voltage transmission facilities owned by Ukrenergo;
  • the critical role regional thermal power plants (TPPs) play in system stability.

Such extended blackouts could have severe consequences, including halting pump stations and leaving cities without water and sewage services.

“The blackouts will definitely be in the summer. How long they will last-I estimate 6-8 hours, but this is without considering shelling. If there are clear shelling attacks, the situation could become much worse, and we must prepare for that,” added Oleh Popenko.

Consequently, Ukrainians may confront significant energy challenges in the summer of 2026, requiring meticulous planning and preparation. Given the forecasts for rising electricity demand and potential external factors like military strikes, it is crucial for the government and responsible agencies to begin implementing measures now to mitigate risks and ensure a stable power supply for the country.

The looming threat of extended power outages raises concerns about the overall energy strategy in Ukraine. As the country grapples with these forecasts, it becomes crucial to understand the factors influencing these decisions.
