Mass Effect Sequel Cancelled and BioWare Studio Closed

According to НВ — Техно: Electronic Arts (EA) has abruptly halted development on the next installment of the Mass Effect trilogy and shut down the Canadian game developer BioWare, sparking widespread disappointment among fans. In response, the #SaveMassEffect petition was launched, quickly gathering over 95,000 signatures within just three days-far surpassing its initial goal of 30,000. At the time of reporting, the petition stood at 94,529 endorsements. Joe Smith, the petition’s creator, emphasized that Mass Effect holds a special place in the hearts of millions of gamers worldwide.

“Its rich and immersive sci-fi universe, where Commander Shepard leads a crew aboard the Normandy, has captivated players for years,” said Joe Smith.

The cancellation of the sequel and the closure of BioWare came as a shock to the community, especially considering BioWare’s long-standing presence since its founding in 1997. Mark Darra, a former BioWare employee until 2021, pointed out that EA owns several major franchises including Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Jade Empire. He warned that reduced funding and uncertain strategic plans from EA could jeopardize the future of these beloved series, putting their remarkable legacies at risk.

Fan Proposals and Industry Insights

Politician Avi Lewis has advocated for federal intervention to support BioWare’s buyout and independent operation, arguing that the studio itself should be given priority to regain control. Meanwhile, NYU Stern Business School professor Joost van Droeinen compared BioWare’s intellectual property to other well-known studios, noting their high market value often places them out of reach for most potential buyers.

“BioWare’s IP is in a situation similar to other studios - all are widely recognized but too costly for most purchasers,” explained Joost van Droeinen.

Recently, a trailer for Mass Effect Universe surfaced online, showcasing the unrealized continuation of the franchise’s 19-year legacy. This has fueled fans’ hopes for a revival, even as experts suggest EA might either sell off these franchises or indefinitely postpone their development.

The decision to cancel the Mass Effect sequel and close BioWare has resonated deeply with both gamers and industry analysts. The rapid growth of the petition highlights the passionate community backing the franchise’s return. In an era where major corporations like EA make impactful choices affecting iconic game legacies, acknowledging fan voices and exploring alternatives is crucial. Reviving BioWare and reclaiming its intellectual properties could be pivotal steps toward restoring trust in the brand and its future projects.
