Emergency Power Outage Schedules Activated

According to ХВИЛЯ: Due to severe cold weather, Ukraine's national power grid will operate under emergency outage schedules on January 9 and 10. A meeting of the Energy Headquarters focused on ensuring a fair distribution of available electricity and finalized a list of critical infrastructure sites that will receive an unconditional priority for power supply. This situation is a direct consequence of the ongoing war, which has severely damaged the country's energy generation capacity.

The meeting included representatives from energy companies, the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development, and regional authorities, including Kyiv. To manage the energy deficit effectively, the State Energy Supervision Authority has been instructed to conduct on-site inspections and ensure efficient resource management.

International Aid and Critical Priorities

On Monday, 14 shipments of aid weighing 78 tons in total arrived at the Energy Ministry's logistics hubs from international partners. The equipment includes five power transformers from Azerbaijan and ten high-capacity generators from Italy. Further assistance is en route from the European Union, Austria, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Italy, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, as well as from the UN agencies UNDP and UNICEF.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that Tuesday and Wednesday will be particularly challenging, despite some daytime support from solar power generation.

He also emphasized that the list of critical infrastructure is being reviewed, with the following remaining the absolute priority:

  • Hospitals
  • Water supply facilities
  • Social service institutions

Other institutions will gradually be transitioned to autonomous operation using generators.

These measures highlight the government's efforts to manage the energy crisis exacerbated by freezing temperatures and a significant power deficit. Prioritizing critical infrastructure like healthcare and water supply is a vital step to sustain the population's basic needs. Furthermore, the influx of international equipment aid is crucial for bolstering the resilience of the national energy system during the winter months.
