EU Guarantees Financial Aid Package for Ukraine

According to Главком: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a guaranteed €90 billion macro-financial assistance package for Ukraine from the EU, even if individual member states attempt to veto it. She made this statement at a conference of EU ambassadors in Brussels on March 9th. Von der Leyen stressed that Ukraine requires consistent financial backing, noting:

'And you have all seen the difficulties we encountered to get the final approval.' - Ursula von der Leyen

A critical step will be the European Council meeting on March 19th, where a final decision on releasing the aid is expected. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is counting on this support. Meanwhile, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has linked unblocking the aid to the restoration of oil transit via the Druzhba pipeline.

The European Commission has prepared a 'Plan B' to disburse the funds should achieving unanimous consent from all 27 EU members prove impossible. This financial commitment is seen as vital for Ukraine's war effort and economic stability. Von der Leyen assured that the EU would honor its commitments, as the credibility and, more importantly, the security of the bloc are at stake.

'I can assure you that in this case we will deliver on our commitments.' - Ursula von der Leyen

This development underscores the EU's determination to support Ukraine amidst the ongoing war and economic pressures. The provision of this substantial aid is poised to significantly impact Ukraine's economic stability and its continued reform process. The upcoming European Council decision on March 19th will be a pivotal moment, particularly given the internal disagreements among member states. It also demonstrates the European Union's commitment to supporting its partners during crises, which could have long-term implications for political stability in the region.
