European Union Sanctions Against Iran

According to Главком: The European Union is preparing a new round of sanctions against Iran in response to the violent suppression of protests within the country. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced these measures, stressing Europe's solidarity with Iranians who are risking their lives to demand freedom for themselves and future generations. This move signals the EU's continued focus on human rights as a cornerstone of its foreign policy.

These new sanctions are aimed at supporting the democratic aspirations of the Iranian people and could significantly impact Iran's economy by targeting key sectors that provide funding for the regime. The EU continues to express support for the protesters, emphasizing the importance of human rights and democratic values, highlighting Iran's growing international isolation amid domestic political tension and social unrest.

The EU has already imposed extensive sanctions on Iran for human rights violations, particularly in connection with protests that have lasted over two weeks. These sanctions also address Iran's nuclear program and its support for Russia in the war against Ukraine. Among the measures already in place are:

  • restrictions in the financial sector;
  • a ban on the export of certain technologies;
  • personal sanctions against high-ranking officials of the country.

In the context of the ongoing protests, which were triggered by brutal repression from the authorities, the EU has prepared a package of additional sanctions. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has acknowledged the deaths of thousands of Iranians during anti-government unrest, placing responsibility for the bloodshed on former U.S. President Donald Trump.
