Ukraine Under Fire and the International Response

According to Главком: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has confirmed the finalization of a €6 billion support package for Ukraine, specifically allocated for the procurement of drones. This decision follows a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine that occurred on the night of May 14. Russian forces launched a combined strike on Kyiv using ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. The assault targeted nine districts of the capital, including:

  • Shevchenkivskyi
  • Pecherskyi
  • Darnytskyi
  • Dniprovskyi
  • Obolonskyi
  • Solomyanskyi
  • Desnyanskyi
  • Sviatoshynskyi
  • Holosiivskyi

The attack caused extensive damage. Reported destruction includes apartment buildings, commercial premises, a business center, a car dealership, garages, and a parked car. In the Darnytskyi district, a nine-story residential building partially collapsed, trapping people under the rubble. Rescue teams have already launched a search and recovery operation.

UN Security Council Meeting Called

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council in response to the events. He stated:

'The world must see that Russia’s answer to all our constructive peace proposals is more terror and violence-and it must act accordingly.' Andrii Sybiha

May 15, 2026, has been declared a day of mourning in Kyiv.

Ursula von der Leyen also strongly condemned Russia’s massive assault:

'Last night, Russia carried out one of its longest and most relentless drone attacks on Ukraine. Another night of death and destruction. And indiscriminate targeting of civilians. While Russia openly mocks diplomatic efforts, we continue to strengthen Ukraine.' Ursula von der Leyen

The completion of this €6 billion aid package underscores the growing international commitment to Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression. This assistance, focused on drones, aims to bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities and protect its civilian population. The devastating strike on Kyiv highlights the severity of the situation and the urgent need for a unified global response. It remains crucial that Ukraine continues to receive support in its fight for sovereignty and security.

In light of the recent escalation, the European Union's commitment to support Ukraine is more critical than ever. This is evident as they have rolled out a substantial €6 billion defense initiative focused on drone technology, aimed at bolstering Ukraine's resilience against ongoing aggression. Such measures highlight the international community's response to Russia's relentless attacks.
