Strained Relations Between Hungary and the EU

According to Главком: The European Union is demanding an explanation from Hungary following the leak of conversations between Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. The European Commission has expressed serious concern over the potential disclosure of confidential information during these discussions. The leaked recordings, dated to late March and early April, contain talks on topics including the possible lifting of sanctions on specific Russian individuals, Ukraine's accession to the EU, and sanctions policy. This incident highlights the ongoing friction between Budapest and Brussels over Hungary's foreign policy direction.

A European Commission spokesperson, Paula Pinho, stated that such actions could threaten the security and interests of the EU and all its citizens.

"It is actively working against the security and interests of the EU and all its citizens. Therefore, this is a matter of serious concern, and the government of the member state in question must urgently provide an explanation," she noted.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen plans to raise the issue at the level of EU national leaders.

Discussions with Lavrov and a Deal with Russia

According to investigations, Lavrov asked Szijjártó to assist in removing the sister of oligarch Alisher Usmanov, Gulbakhor Ismailova, from sanctions lists; she was subsequently delisted. As reported by The Washington Post, Szijjártó was in regular contact with Lavrov, even during breaks in meetings in Brussels. The Hungarian minister confirmed the regular conversations but denied discussing confidential matters.

Furthermore, the Hungarian government signed an agreement with Russia to expand economic, trade, energy, and cultural ties, raising additional questions about Hungary's foreign policy within the context of its EU relations. These events could significantly impact the future development of relations between Hungary and the EU. Hungary's actions are particularly sensitive as the EU maintains a unified front on sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

This situation underscores the tension between Hungary and the European Union, as the country continues to strengthen ties with Russia despite sanctions imposed on Moscow. The EU's response could lead to further political consequences for Hungary, including potential sanctions or other measures from the European Commission that might affect the country's economic and political stability. Observers also note that these events could influence the EU's overall strategy regarding relations with Russia and regional security.

This recent development comes on the heels of leaked audio revealing discussions between the Hungarian and Russian foreign ministers regarding Ukraine's EU aspirations and sanctions. The implications of these talks could further strain Hungary's relationship with the EU, raising questions about the future of diplomatic negotiations in the region.
