NATO Article 5 Could Be Triggered by Russian Strike on European Arms Factory, Warns EU Defense Commissioner Kubilius
EU Defense Commissioner Issues Strong Warning
According to ХВИЛЯ: Andrius Kubilius, the European Commissioner for Defense, has declared that any missile or air strike by Russia targeting an arms manufacturing facility in Europe would activate NATO's Article 5, which mandates collective defense among member states. This statement came on Thursday following recent remarks by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, who on Wednesday identified European arms factories as potential military targets for Russia.
Kubilius's aide clarified that the warning specifically concerns aerial bombings or missile attacks on such factories. Against this backdrop, Estonia has confirmed that Russian intelligence agencies orchestrated the August arson attack on the defense firm Milrem Robotics. Similar investigations are underway in Bulgaria, Poland, Slovakia, and other European countries, highlighting a pattern of covert Russian operations targeting defense infrastructure across the continent.
NATO's Response to Escalating Threats
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has responded to Russia’s threats, including a diplomatic note hinting at nuclear escalation linked to NATO’s activities near Russian borders.
Kubilius emphasized: “If Russia strikes our factories on European soil, Article 5 will be invoked.”
However, a NATO diplomat noted that Kubilius would only have the authority to declare the activation of Article 5 if he becomes NATO Secretary General. Rutte added that Article 5’s language is intentionally ambiguous to avoid giving adversaries strategic advantages.
These developments underscore growing tensions between Russia and NATO and raise serious concerns about security in Europe. Arms factories remain critical military assets, and their protection is a top priority for NATO members. Amid escalating Russian aggression, the Alliance is focused on strengthening its defense capabilities and unity, which will significantly impact regional stability and security.
