The Commission Reacts to Zelensky's Interceptor Missile Warning

Commission spokesperson Balázs Ujvári said this year the European Union has already allocated €8.5 billion for Ukraine's defense, with the money intended for fighter jets, missiles, and various short- and long-range drones.

Ukraine, according to Ujvári, is responsible for defining its own requirements and sending a list of the equipment it needs. “We examine that list and proceed on that basis. If Ukraine wants interceptors or related hardware, we can of course review the request,” he noted, adding that information exchange continues, equipment lists keep arriving, and contracts keep being signed.

He also emphasized there would be no summer pause in releasing defense funding-a sign that the EU is prepared to support Ukraine on an ongoing basis.

Funding Ukraine's Military Procurement

Kyiv can seek financial support for purchasing interceptors and other gear even if such items are manufactured outside the Union. “Ukraine has to decide for itself what it needs, so it effectively has complete freedom to pick almost any equipment,” Ujvári added.

The official reason partners have given Kyiv for the reduced deliveries of ballistic-missile interceptors is the ongoing hostilities in the Middle East. Zelensky has not ruled out that the cutback is politically driven, intended to push Ukraine into being more accommodating. Ujvári, for his part, said the European Commission is working “at full strength, day and night,” aiming to achieve maximum progress as quickly as possible.

The Commission's latest message indicates that supporting Ukraine remains a priority for the EU, despite added strains from warfare in other parts of the world.
