The Importance of Supporting Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: British historian Timothy Garton Ash argues in a column for The Guardian that Europe can save Ukraine from the Russian aggressor Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. Ash emphasizes the importance of military and economic assistance to Ukraine amid the prolonged war that Putin has been waging against Ukraine for almost four years.

According to the historian, the situation for Putin could change in 2026 or 2027. This could create new opportunities for support to Ukraine from European countries. Ash believes that Europe has the potential to influence the course of events if it demonstrates will and determination. He stresses that

Strategic Resolve of Europe

Furthermore, Garton Ash notes that the new U.S. National Security Strategy calls for 'cultivating resistance to the current trajectory of Europe in European countries.' The historian urges the manifestation of willpower, strategic resolve, fighting spirit, and courage to place long-term collective interests above short-term partisan-political opportunities. This, in his opinion, is key to ensuring stability and security in the region.

Timothy Garton Ash's statements underscore the importance of collective European efforts to support Ukraine, especially in the context of the growing threat from Russia. His arguments indicate that changes in the political landscape may open new opportunities for more active support from European states, which, in turn, could significantly influence the course of the conflict. Maintaining unity and strategic resolve within international politics remains critically important for ensuring stability in the region.
