The History of Figure Skating

According to НОК: The sport of figure skating originated in the 19th century. Jackson Haines is credited as the father of modern figure skating for his innovation in the 1860s, blending skating technique with music and ballet movements. Figure skating made its Olympic debut at the 1908 London Games and was also contested at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics. Ice dancing was added to the Olympic program in 1976, and the team event was introduced at the 2014 Games.

The 2026 Olympic Games

At the 2026 Olympic Games, to be held in Milan-Cortina, medals will be awarded in five figure skating disciplines:

  • Men's singles
  • Women's singles
  • Pairs
  • Ice dance
  • Team event

A total of 142 athletes-71 men and 71 women-will compete in these events. The Ukrainian team has secured one quota spot for the 2026 Games. Ukraine will be represented by a single male athlete competing in figure skating.

This single qualification highlights the challenges and opportunities for the sport's development in Ukraine. The 2026 Olympics will be a significant platform for Ukraine to showcase its potential on the world stage, underscoring the need for greater support and development to increase its representation at future Games.
