Finland Deports Record Number of Convicted Foreign Nationals as Expulsions Surge

Finland's Deportation Decisions

According to Главком: Finland's Immigration Service, known as Migri, has issued a record number of deportation orders for foreign nationals convicted of crimes. This surge of over 30% compared to 2024 stems from stricter oversight of residence permits and recent legislative amendments. The agency's intensified efforts in this area are reflected in the sharp increase.

According to the data, Migri ordered the deportation of 169 individuals who had committed criminal offenses. The vast majority of these orders concerned men. The highest number of deportation decisions were issued to:

  • Citizens of Iraq
  • Citizens of Estonia
  • Citizens of Russia

This indicates that nationals from these three countries are the most heavily represented among those facing removal.

The increase in figures is partly linked to the enhanced monitoring of residence permits.

Olli Koskipirtti

Koskipirtti also pointed to the enactment of a legislative amendment that lowered the threshold for expelling individuals who had been granted international protection. These measures are intended to enhance national security and ensure compliance with the law. Finland, like other EU nations, is navigating the complex balance between humanitarian obligations and public safety.

The rise in deportation orders is driven not only by legal changes but also by heightened security concerns, which could have significant implications for the country's immigration policy. This trend may also affect Finland's international relations with the countries whose citizens are being deported, as issues of human rights and refugee protection remain sensitive in the global arena.
