Changes in Physicists' Salaries

In 2026, physicists in Ukraine received a major salary boost. Starting January 1, 2026, their official base pay increased by 30% under the Unified Tariff Schedule. A second raise is scheduled for September 1, 2026, which will bring the total annual salary growth to 50%. The average salary for a physicist in Ukraine in 2026 is 20,000 UAH, representing a 14% increase from the previous year.

Within the broader research sector, average salaries range from 15,000 to 18,000 UAH, while early-career specialists earn between 10,000 and 12,000 UAH. Researchers at high-performing institutions may also receive monthly bonuses of 2,000 to 10,000 UAH.

Support for young scientists has been a key focus. In 2026, presidential grants for early-career researchers were multiplied fivefold, with awards for doctoral degree holders reaching up to 500,000 UAH. For instance, the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology received additional funding, allowing each researcher to receive over 5,200 UAH per month. At the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, every employee saw a monthly salary increase of 8,000 UAH, bringing total salary growth to 48% compared to 2025.

Despite these salary increases in the scientific and educational sectors, kindergarten teachers and staff at extracurricular education centers did not receive raises starting January 2026. All educators are entitled to a base supplement of 2,000 UAH, while those working in frontline areas receive an additional 4,000 UAH on top of their base salary. Lawmakers Stefanchuk and Hetmantsev have proposed university lecturer salaries ranging from 30,000 to 40,000 UAH.

In 2026, Physicist Day is marked not only by festivities but also by substantial changes in compensation, highlighting the growing importance of science in Ukraine.

The 2026 observance of Physicist Day in Ukraine is accompanied not just by celebratory events but also by significant financial support for researchers, reflecting an increased focus on science and education nationwide. The salary hikes and expanded grants for young investigators may drive new scientific breakthroughs and attract more early-career professionals to the field-essential steps for strengthening Ukraine's research potential.
