France Imposes €1 Million Fine on Owner of Tanker Linked to Russia's Shadow Fleet
€1 Million Penalty for Tagor Tanker Owner
According to Главком: French authorities have levied a €1 million fine against the owner of the Tagor, a tanker associated with Russia's so-called shadow fleet. The vessel was intercepted by the French Navy in the Atlantic Ocean on May 31. The penalty was triggered by the tanker flying a Cameroonian flag and its refusal to comply with orders from French military personnel.
The Tagor, which had changed its registration multiple times in the past, was en route from Russia. After its seizure, the ship was escorted to the Bay of Douarnenez in the Finistère department. The owner was penalized for lacking a legitimate flag, a point confirmed by Stéphane Kellengerger, who stated:
“The tanker's owner was fined for not having a proper flag and for refusing to follow the instructions of the French military.” - Stéphane Kellengerger
The tanker is currently subject to international sanctions, and prosecutors have launched an investigation into the incident. The Russian captain of the tanker was initially arrested but later released. Once the legal process for admitting guilt is completed, the administrative detention of the vessel will be lifted, allowing the Tagor to depart French territorial waters. The operation to detain the tanker was carried out with support from several partners.
Enhanced Maritime Surveillance
This incident highlights France's and other nations' intensified monitoring of vessels potentially linked to Russian economic and military interests amid tightening international sanctions. The Tagor's detention also showcases how countries are collaborating to combat the shadow fleet, which employs illicit practices to evade sanctions. The ongoing developments surrounding the tanker and its owner could have significant implications for global maritime shipping and regional political dynamics.
The recent fine imposed on the owner of the Tagor is part of a broader initiative by France to clamp down on vessels associated with Russia's clandestine maritime operations.
