Gas Equipment in an Apartment or House: What Can Lead to a Large Fine
Apartment and house owners should not independently replace a gas boiler, stove, or water heater, especially with a device of different power or by relocating pipes. There is no fixed new fine of 100,000 UAH; however, due to violations, gas may be disconnected, and a significant amount charged. This was reminded by “First Business”.
Replacing Gas Equipment: Actions That May Lead to Gas Disconnection
Unauthorized intervention is not only considered illegal tap-in to the gas pipeline. Problems may arise after the installation or replacement of gas appliances without proper documentation, as well as when the owner relocates a boiler, meter, or pipes, changes their configuration, or installs more powerful equipment.
In such cases, the gas distribution company may disconnect the appliance from the network and install a plug. Supply can be resumed after the violations are rectified and the necessary procedures are completed.
A regular replacement of a stove or boiler without changing the location and power must also be carried out by certified specialists. If a system reconstruction is planned, technical conditions, a project, and installation work according to an agreed procedure are required.
Fine up to 100 thousand: Where the Large Amount Comes From
The claim about a “new fine of up to 100 thousand hryvnias” is incorrect. The law does not establish a single penalty of that amount specifically for the replacement of a boiler or stove.
Large amounts may appear not as an administrative fine but as a charge for unaccounted gas or compensation for damages if the operator detects unauthorized connections, intervention in the network, or meter. The calculation depends on the nature of the violation, the power of the equipment, and the period for which consumption volumes are determined.
For example, the Dnipropetrovsk branch of Gas Networks reported that for illegal connection of a pipeline in one of the districts, 1.34 million UAH was charged. At the same time, unauthorized replacements of appliances are grounds for disconnection from gas supply.
Before any work, it is advisable to contact your gas transmission operator. This will help to understand whether a simple replacement of the appliance is enough or if a project and official reconstruction of the system are needed.
It is worth noting that one of the most common violations is overpowering installed gas appliances.
