WHO Director Rushes to Congo Amid Fresh Ebola Outbreak

According to Главком: Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), is urgently traveling to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in response to a new Ebola outbreak. His itinerary includes a visit to Bunia, a city in Ituri Province where more than 90% of all cases have been reported. This marks the country's seventeenth recorded Ebola outbreak in its history.

The WHO declared a public health emergency on May 17. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated:

“Ebola has returned. This time, the outbreak has hit Ituri Province the hardest. I know how frightening this is, and I know the people of Ituri are carrying a burden that is not easy to bear.” - Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

International medical teams have already been deployed to the epicenter, working closely with the government and other partners to contain the spread.

Global Community Responds

In response to the situation, the Canadian government has temporarily suspended entry for foreign nationals from countries with high rates of Ebola transmission. These restrictions, effective until August 29, also include a freeze on immigration document processing for individuals from those nations. Dr. Luc Brisebois, Director General of the Centre for Border and Travel Health at the Public Health Agency of Canada, explained that these measures are being taken “out of an abundance of caution.” Notably, these restrictions were implemented ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has similarly advised its citizens to avoid travel to affected regions in the Congo. Dr. Tedros emphasized the need for coordinated action:

“We are working under the leadership of the government alongside all relevant partners, and we are united around a single goal: to stop this outbreak and protect your communities.” - Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

He assured that international teams will remain on the ground as long as necessary to stabilize the situation: “I have seen this strength firsthand. Our teams are already in place and will stay as long as needed.”
