A Fresh Perspective on Continental Evolution

According to НВ — Техно: Geologists have refined the timeline detailing the formation of the American continents. Newly published research in the journal Earth and Planetary Physics clarifies when the tectonic collision between Central and South America occurred. By examining the magnetic properties of volcanic rocks collected from the Northern Andes in Colombia, scientists determined that the main collision phases concluded around 10 million years ago. This study was led by geologists Víctor Piedrahíta and J. Lee, with support from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).

Insights from Volcanic Rock Analysis

The volcanic samples analyzed date back to the late Miocene epoch, approximately between 12 and 6 million years ago. These were gathered from the Combea volcanic province, situated in central Colombia. Researchers used magnetic structure analysis to identify the orientation of magnetic minerals within the rocks, revealing that most samples preserved their original magnetic signatures formed during magma movement.

The findings indicate that during the late Miocene, these volcanic formations experienced minimal tectonic pressure, with deformation limited to localized areas. The most intense tectonic collision and deformation in the Northern Andes occurred earlier, from the Oligocene to the mid-Miocene. By the time these rocks formed, tectonic compression had significantly diminished.
